A study and analysis of Carbon footprint to decrease the environmental impact of an espresso machine throughout its life cycle. A recent study by World Coffee Research shows that by 2050, the arable land suitable for the cultivation of Arabica coffee will fall by at least 50% globally due to the effects of climate change. If this happens, there will be big repercussions along the entire coffee chain, but the 25 million farmers growing coffee would suffer most. Climate change is nothing but a consequence of the irresponsible way that we humans have so far behaved toward the Earth’s eco- system. For centuries we have ignored the issues of energy waste, greenhouse gas emissions, exploitation of limited resources, waste recycling and environmental pollution. So today we are starting to pay the price. If we do not take urgent measures, we risk life becom- ing increasingly hard for us humans. However, there is hope for the situation. In recent years the impor- tance of environmental stewardship is recognised for its role in the very survival of the ecosystem we are part of. In many areas of the world policies are being implemented to change our wrong ways of interacting with planet Earth. The world of coffee is not immune to this responsibility because all phases of its supply chain have an impact on the environment. Thus, our industry is responsible for correcting practices that are not envi- ronmentally sustainable.
