Simonelli Group at Dubai Expo to talk about
“Technology and Innovation in the coffee chain”
“Technology and Innovation in the coffee chain” is the theme of a meeting attended yesterday (Feb. 21) by Simonelli Group at the Italian Pavilion at Dubai Expo. The event is part of the “Marche/Land of Excellence” program, the week of meetings dedicated to innovation promoted by the Marche Region. A busy calendar of events to present 19 projects – involving several Marche companies (including Ariston and Fileni, ed.) together with the academic world – and to promote the territory’s “know-how.”
In collaboration with theUniversity of Camerino, Simonelli Group presented its experience and contribution in terms of technology and innovation in the coffee industry supply chain (this link Technology and Innovation in the Coffee chain – YouTube to review the company’s talk at Dubai Expo). “The ability to innovate, among other things also awarded a few weeks ago with theIndustrial Excellence Award 2021 for Italy and a finalist for Europe,” said Fabio Ceccarani, Simonelli Group CEO, “comes from a company that is organized precisely to innovate in a sustainable way from a product, platform and proximitypoint of view.
“The drivers of our R&D,” Ceccarani continues, “are basically three: to improve the extraction performance of machines through the extensive use of emerging technologies; to cut down energy consumption, which accounts for more than 90 percent of the environmental impact of all coffee machines; and to improve the user experience, through simplifying human-machine interaction and paying attention to theergonomics and aesthetic design of our products.
To achieve these goals, Simonelli Group has created a dense network of relationships with universities, research centers, suppliers and local institutions (several research projects have been carried out thanks to European funds made available by the Marche Region, ed.) that “has enabled us to offer the market innovative espresso extraction solutions that reduce environmental impact.”
Sustainability also passes through territorial development: “In collaboration with the University of Camerino,” Ceccarani continues, “we have established the Research and Innovation Coffee Hub, a scientific research hub that involves 5 doctoral students in different thematic areas and has the primary objective of increasing knowledge about coffee and lays the foundation for the development of new technologies.”
Another line of direction for Simonelli Group R&D is the introduction of digital technologies that enable coffee machines to become intelligent and to dialogue with the surrounding system. “Today, more than ever, it is necessary to propose itself on the market with asystem offer, made up of connected machines and digital services that can help baristas, technical assistance and business owners to monitor and improve performance, and to make timely and informed decisions. Data management(telemetry and predictive maintenance through IoT sensors with which our machines can be equipped), management of the installed fleet of machines, technical and coffee culture training, and spare parts are just some of the digital services we are now able to offer through our DOSE (Digital Online Services) platforms and Coffee Knowledge Hub. To do this, we have moved from offering “stand-alone” machines to offering a system composed of connected machines and digital platforms.”
